In this universe, Kira was also wrong, and her wrongness had enabled eleven more years of extraction that might have been prevented, and the methane that was released during those eleven years contributed to a warming trajectory that crossed some unknown threshold from which there was no return. She had followed the precautionary principle. She had chosen the interpretation that did not require accusing anyone of anything. Was that science or was that complicity? In a third universe, she published nothing. The truth remained unknown. The permafrost continued to warm. No one was blamed. No one was exonerated. The world continued its slow acceleration toward whatever future the physics demanded. Kira Nakamura continued to collect data and run analyses and avoid conclusions. She became a cautionary tale told to graduate students: the scientist who had the data but lacked the courage. Or she became a model of intellectual humility: the scientist who refused to claim certainty where certainty did not exist. All three universes existed simultaneously. All three were equally real. The data did not choose between them.
