The heating broke again. I fixed it because someone had to. It always falls to someone. My name is Frank Delaney. I'm forty-two. I work at the plant on 47th Street. I live in apartment 3B with my wife and two kids. The apartment is cold in the winter and hot in the summer and the heating only works about half the time. I've been fixing it for three years. The plant is cold too. It's always cold. The machines make enough heat but the building was built in the last century and the insulation is shot. So we wear layers. We drink coffee. We fix things when they break. Today the coffee machine broke. I fixed it. I don't know how to fix machines. I just know that if nobody fixes them, nobody gets coffee. And if nobody gets coffee, nothing gets done. At lunch, Tommy from the next line told me about the Sunlight Coalition. Tommy's younger brother is involved with them, or something like them. Tommy wasn't sure. He said the Coalition claims the Warning is fake. The Warning is the thing the Navigation Authority has been telling us about for generations. The thing that says the Sun is going to go bad and we need to move. "You believe it?" Tommy asked. I didn't answer. I was eating a sandwich. It was ham on white bread. The bread was stale. "My brother says the Sun is fine," Tommy said. "He says the Authority is just using the Warning to keep control. Says the calculations are wrong. Says the Sun isn't changing." "Maybe your brother is right," I said. "Or maybe he's not." Tommy finished his sandwich. "Either way, something's happening. People are talking. The Authority is nervous." I finished my coffee. It was weak and bitter and too hot. I went back to the line. That night, the kids were asleep. My wife was watching television. The news was talking about the Sunlight Coalition. A protest in the eastern sector. Someone had damaged a power plant. The Authority said it was sabotage. The Coalition said it was self-defense. I turned off the television. I went to bed. The next morning, the news said five thousand people had been killed. They didn't say how. They didn't say why. They just said five thousand people had been killed and the Authority was investigating. My wife said: "Five thousand people?" I said: "I don't know." I went to work. The plant was running at half capacity. Half the machines were broken. Nobody had fixed them yet. I fixed the ones I could. The rest would have to wait. At lunch, Tommy wasn't at his station. I asked the foreman where he was. The foreman said Tommy's brother had been involved in the protest. Tommy had taken the day off. "Is he okay?" I asked. The foreman shrugged. "I don't know. I'm the foreman, not his mother." I ate my sandwich. It was tuna on white bread. The bread was stale. That evening, the news said the five thousand people had been workers. Technicians. People who had worked at the power plants for years. They had been accused of treason. The Authority said they had sabotaged the migration plan. The Coalition said they had been killed because they knew too much. I didn't know what to think. I went to bed. The next day, I went to work. The plant was running at quarter capacity. Three quarters of the machines were broken. Nobody had fixed them. I fixed the ones I could. The rest would have to wait. At lunch, Tommy wasn't back. Neither was anyone else from his section. The foreman said they were all suspended. Pending investigation. I ate my sandwich. It was egg on white bread. The bread was stale. That night, the news said the suspended workers had been executed. Not five thousand. Not anymore. The rest had been taken somewhere else. The Authority said it was a quarantine. The Coalition said it was an execution. I turned off the television. I went to bed. The next morning, I went to work. The plant was closed. The gates were locked. A guard stood at the entrance with a rifle. He looked at me and shook his head. "Can't go in," he said. "Why not?" "Plant's shut down. Authority order." I looked at the plant. It was a big building. It had been built fifty years ago. It had kept the city warm for fifty years. Now it was closed. I walked home. The apartment was cold. The heating was broken. I didn't fix it. That evening, the news said the Execution was complete. Five thousand people were dead. They were workers and technicians and engineers. They had built the power plants. They had maintained the migration plan. They had kept the city warm for fifty years. And now they were dead. The Authority said they were traitors. The Coalition said they were martyrs. I didn't say anything. I went to bed. The next morning, I woke up and the sky was bright. Too bright. I went to the window and looked out. The sky was white. Not the white of clouds. The white of a light that was too strong, too intense, too much for the world to handle. I stopped the car on the way to pick up the kids. I sat in the car and looked at the sky. It was white. It stayed white for a long time. Then it faded to red. A red Sun hung in the sky, bloated and silent. I thought about the five thousand people. I thought about Tommy. I thought about the plant, closed and cold and silent. Then I drove to the school. I picked up the kids. I drove home. The apartment was cold. The heating was broken. I didn't fix it. I made sandwiches for the kids. Ham on white bread. Tuna on white bread. Egg on white bread. The bread was stale. After dinner, I went to bed. The apartment was cold. I pulled the blanket up to my chin and lay in the dark and listened to the wind outside. The world had changed. I didn't know how. I didn't know what would happen tomorrow. I didn't know if the kids would have school. I didn't know if the plant would open again. I didn't know if the heating would ever work. I knew one thing: tomorrow, I would wake up. I would go to the plant. I would fix the machines that were broken. I would drink coffee. I would make sandwiches. I would come home. The world had changed. But the heating was still broken. And someone had to fix it. © 2026 - Authored by Z R ZHANG ( EL9507135 -- パスポート番号[ちゅうごく] 중국 여권 번호 Номер паспорта หมายเลขหนังสือเดินทาง Passnummer رقم جواز السفر CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
