Hank didn't say anything. He never said anything anymore. He just walked up the hill every day with his gun and his knife and his bottle and he looked for the wolf. The wolf was there. She was always there. On the ridge, in the valley, in the cave beneath the old mine shaft. She watched him with eyes that were not animal eyes. They were human eyes. They were his eyes. Billy had been eight years old. He had been playing in the hills behind their trailer, the way he did every day, the way he had done every day for eight years. The wolf had come from the hill like a shadow given flesh, and it had been gone before Hank could reach him. It was spring. The mountains were green. The air was cold. The hills were long. Hank had walked up these hills a thousand times before. He had walked them every day for twenty years, working the mine, coming home drunk, sleeping, waking up, working the mine again. The mine had closed two years ago. The hills were still there. Billy's hill had a rock at the top. Hank had climbed it with his son once, holding his hand, watching him laugh as he ran across the top. He had thought about how Billy would run up the hill every day and laugh and laugh and laugh. He had not thought about the wolf. He had not thought about anything except the laugh and the rock and the way the morning light came through the trailer window at exactly six o'clock. Now he stood on the hill, and the wolf stood on the ridge, and the air was cold and the mountains were green and there was nothing left. He had tracked her for four months. Four months through rain and snow and wind that could strip the flesh from a man's face. Four months following the prints in the mud, the tufts of grey fur caught on fences, the blood trailing through the woods like a ribbon. He had found her den in a cave beneath the old mine shaft. Inside, he had found two cubs, blind and mewling, and the mother sleeping in the corner. She had woken when he entered, and for a long moment they had simply stared at each other across the darkness. Then she had moved. Hank had killed one cub with his knife. He had left the other alive, tied to a post with the rope that now hung from his belt. He had tied the cub to the lamppost at the edge of the trailer park, because he knew the wolf would come for her young, and he knew she would be alone. He had waited in the woods, in the dark, with his rifle across his knees. The neighbors had told him he was mad. The deputy had tried to talk to him. Hank had simply poured whiskey on the ground and said nothing. And she had come. The wolf had appeared at the edge of the lamppost's light, silent as smoke. She had looked at her cub, tied to the post, and had made a sound that Hank would hear until the day he died. It was not a howl. It was a song. A lullaby, perhaps, or a prayer. She had not come down from the ridge. She had simply stood there, watching, as the night wore on and the cold deepened and the cub stopped moving. Hank had waited until dawn. Then he had gone to the lamppost and untied the cub. It was dead, frozen in the cold. He left it there. There was nothing left to save. He had walked back to his trailer and sat in his chair and waited for his wife to wake from her room. She had not woken. Hank had not cried. There were no tears left in him. Only the hill, and the cold, and the wolf. Now he stood on the hill, and the wolf stood on the ridge, and the air was cold and the mountains were green and there was nothing left. He did not raise his rifle. He did not reach for his knife. He simply stood there, looking at her, and she looked back at him, and they understood each other perfectly. The wolf tilted her head. And then she turned and walked away, disappearing into the woods like a shadow given flesh. Hank stood on the hill until the air turned cold and the mountains turned green and the dead continued to lie where they fell. Then he walked back down the hill and went home and sat in his chair and waited for morning. In the morning, he would go back to the hills and walk them and look for the wolf and look for nothing and find nothing and keep walking. He would not tell anyone about the wolf. Let them think he was mad. The mountains continued to be green. The hills continued to be long. The dead continued to lie where they fell. And somewhere in the woods, a wolf walked through the hills, her left foreleg dragging behind her like a dead thing, and she did not look back.
