The Chicago Canal had receded further than anyone could remember. Jack O'Brien stood on the rain-slicked bank and watched the fish floating belly-up in the shallow pools like discarded playing cards. The gang had been pumping something into the river for weeks, and the water level dropped to the height of a man's thigh. Men waded through the muck with flashlights, pulling up things that had no names. Shorty was twenty-eight and short, and he had always been short. His mother called him Jack when she was being serious, and the streets called him Shorty because it was easier. He dealt in cheap whiskey, cigarettes, and gambling chips, all carried in a battered leather satchel that had seen better decades. Business was bad. Sal Moretti, the man who controlled the north side, had not paid him for three weeks. Last night, his mother had coughed so hard he thought she would break. The doctor's prescription sat on the kitchen table, unpaid and uncollected. It cost more than Shorty had made in a month. He set down his satchel and looked at the water. The canal was black and smelled of oil. He rolled up his sleeves and stepped into the muck. The cold hit him first, then the smell, then the realization that the canal bed was not flat but full of holes. Shorty took three steps and his foot dropped into one of those holes. He fell forward, and the water closed over his head. A hand grabbed the back of his jacket and hauled him up. The man who pulled him out was big, with a face like a smashed tomato and eyes that did not blink. "You got guts, little guy," the man said. His name was Vinnie. Vinnie told Shorty they were looking for something that had been washed downstream. Something valuable. As a favor, Vinnie handed him an envelope. It was thick. Sal's advance, Vinnie said. But there was a condition: deliver a package to the pier. Warehouse seven. Midnight. Shorty knew what that meant. He had delivered packages for Sal before. They were never what they seemed. But the envelope was heavy, and his mother's cough was getting worse, and there was always a next time. There was always a next time. At the pier, Sal was waiting. He was a man who wore expensive suits and spoke in a voice like gravel. He gave Shorty a small metal box. "Take this to the south end. Give it to the man in the grey coat. Do not open it. Do not look at it. Do not think about it." Shorty walked through the rain with the box under his arm. The streets of Chicago were empty except for the occasional taxi and the ever-present police, who looked the other way when Sal Moretti was involved. Everyone knew that. Everyone pretended not to know. At the south end, the man in the grey coat was dead. He lay in an alley with a bullet hole in his forehead and the grey coat soaked in blood. The box was still under Shorty's arm. He set it down, opened it, and found it empty. The gold was gone. He heard footsteps behind him. Vinnie. Two more men. They did not say anything. They did not need to. Sal's voice came over a telephone booth down the street. Shorty could hear it clearly, as if Sal were standing right next to him. "Your mother's nursing home had a fire last night. Terrible tragedy. I am so sorry, Shorty. But the gold. Where is the gold?" Shorty stood in the rain for a long time. The box was empty. The man was dead. His mother was dead. The gold was gone. There was nothing left to barter. Vinnie raised his gun. The rain made the barrel slick. Shorty did not run. He had learned by now that running never helped. The shot was loud and then it was quiet. Shorty's body fell into the canal, and the water closed over him like it had never been there. The gold scattered across the mud where the box had broken open. The rain washed the blood away. The canal continued to flow, black and oily and indifferent, toward the lake and then to the sea. In his office on the fourth floor, Sal Moretti watched the rain through the window. He lit a cigar and took a long drag. The smoke curled up toward the ceiling like a question that had no answer. © 2026 - Authored by Z R ZHANG ( EL9507135 -- パスポート番号[ちゅうごく] 중국 여권 번호 Номер паспорта หมายเลขหนังสือเดินทาง Passnummer رقم جواز السفر CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
