The rain fell on Los Angeles like a judgment, steady and merciless, washing nothing clean. Jack Donovan sat in his car outside the apartment building on Sunset Boulevard and watched the water stream down his windshield, thinking about how the city looked exactly the way he felt: wet, cold, and full of things he'd rather forget. In his left forearm, beneath the skin and muscle and bone, lay the Devil's Eye. It was a magnetic needle, three inches long, forged in a Japanese prison camp in 1944 by scientists who had been experimenting with electromagnetic weapons. Jack had been their test subject. He had survived. Most of his unit had not. He had come to Los Angeles to disappear, but the Devil's Eye had other plans. It hummed when danger was near, and tonight it was humming louder than it had in months. The trouble found him outside a nightclub on Wilshire Boulevard. A nineteen-year-old girl had collapsed on the sidewalk, her body convulsing, her lips turning a shade of green that made Jack's stomach turn. A woman in a detective's uniform was kneeling beside her, shouting for someone, anyone to call an ambulance. "Move back!" Jack said, and the crowd parted because there was something in his voice that made people listen. He knelt beside the girl and placed two fingers on her wrist, then rolled up his left sleeve. The Devil's Eye responded immediately, vibrating with such intensity that Jack felt it in his teeth, in his bones, in the marrow of his skull. He could feel the poison now, coiled around the girl's heart like a snake. It was a synthetic substance, something new and nasty that no conventional medicine had ever encountered. But the Devil's Eye didn't point to the poison itself, it pointed to the needle that had delivered it, and that needle was still embedded in the girl's chest. "I need to get this needle out," Jack said to the detective. "But I need your help." The detective looked up at him with eyes that had seen too much to trust anyone easily. "Who are you?" "Someone who can help. That's all that matters right now." She studied him for a long moment, then nodded once. "I'm Detective Sarah Collins. This is my sister, Nancy." Jack worked quickly, using the Devil's Eye to create a magnetic field that would draw the needle free. It was a technique the Japanese scientists had taught him, or rather forced him to learn, under conditions he would never describe to anyone. The needle in his arm glowed faintly beneath his skin, and Jack could feel the poison being drawn out of Nancy's body like water being pulled from a sponge. When the needle finally came free, it flew from Nancy's chest and embedded itself in the brick wall across the street with a sound like a bell tolling. Nancy gasped, her body going limp, and then her eyes opened. Sarah Collins dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her face. "Nancy? Nancy, can you hear me?" The girl nodded weakly. "Sister... what happened?" "You were poisoned," Sarah said. "But this man saved you." She turned to look at Jack with something between gratitude and suspicion. "Who are you, really?" Jack smiled wearily. "A doctor. That's all that matters." But he knew it wasn't enough. Sarah Collins was a detective, and detectives didn't accept easy answers. She would ask questions, and some of those questions would lead to answers that could get them both killed. Because the poisoned needle in the wall wasn't just a weapon. It was a message. And Jack knew, with the certainty of a man who had spent his life reading the signs, that the message was meant for him. --- Three days later, Jack stood in the office of Dr. Arthur Fleming at the Veterans Administration Hospital. The doctor was a middle-aged man with tired eyes and a clipboard he clutched like a shield. "You claim," Dr. Fleming said slowly, "that you removed a poisoned needle from a girl's heart using nothing but... what exactly? Some kind of electromagnetic implant?" "Something like that," Jack said carefully. "An implant that is not recognized by any medical authority in the world." "Then perhaps it is time for a new authority." Dr. Fleming sighed. He had heard this before, from men who had seen too much war and not enough therapy. "Very well, Mr. Donovan. I will give you one chance to prove your methods. There is a patient in my care who defies all conventional treatment. If you can help her, I will consider your techniques worthy of further study. If you cannot..." He paused意味深长ly. "Then you will leave Los Angeles and never practice medicine here again." Jack met the doctor's gaze steadily. "What is the diagnosis?" "We do not have one. The patient is a young woman, nineteen years old, daughter of a prominent family. She has been ill for three months. Her symptoms include progressive weakness, discoloration of the skin, and occasional episodes where her body temperature drops to near freezing. The best physicians in Los Angeles have examined her and found nothing wrong. And yet she wastes away before our eyes." Jack felt the Devil's Eye hum in his arm. It was a faint vibration, barely perceptible, but it was there. Something in this doctor's hospital was connected to the poisoned needle. Something dark and military. "I will accept your challenge," Jack said. --- The hospital was everything Jack expected from a government institution: bureaucratic, understaffed, and suffocating with the weight of institutional failure. He was led through sterile corridors and fluorescent-lit wards to a room on the fourth floor, where a young woman lay dying in a hospital bed that had seen better days. Her name was Diana Mercer, and she was beautiful in the way a dying flower is beautiful: pale, fragile, and impossibly sad. Jack knelt beside her bed and placed his fingers on her wrist. The Devil's Eye screamed. It was not a metaphor. The needle actually vibrated with such intensity that Jack felt it in his teeth, in his bones, in the marrow of his skull. He closed his eyes and sent his awareness through the needle's magnetic field, and what he found made his blood run cold. There were three needles inside Diana's body. Three poisoned needles, each one embedded in a different organ, each one slowly draining her life force over the course of three months. This was not the work of an assassin. This was the work of something far older and far more sinister. The Devil's Eye project. Jack had read about it in his military files, the ones he had stolen from a classified archive in 1952. The project had been a joint operation between the military and a private pharmaceutical company, experimenting with electromagnetic weapons and mind control. The poisoned needles were the delivery system, designed to be inserted into a victim's body without detection and to slowly drain their life force while the researchers studied the effects. Diana was not sick. She was an experiment. The three poisoned needles were part of a larger program, a systematic effort to develop a new class of biological weapons that could be deployed without detection. Someone in this hospital was using Diana as a test subject, draining her life force to power something far more dangerous than either of them understood. Jack looked up from Diana's wrist and met the eyes of the woman standing in the doorway. She was young, perhaps twenty-five, with sharp features and an expression that was equal parts grief and determination. "Detective Sarah Collins," she said. "I've been investigating a series of disappearances in downtown Los Angeles. All of the missing women had one thing in common: they were connected to the VA Hospital in some way." Jack felt the Devil's Eye go still. When the needle went still, it meant danger was imminent. "I think Diana is next," Sarah said quietly. "And I think you are the only person who can save her." Jack looked back at Diana, then at his left arm where the Devil's Eye lay embedded. He had five minutes of magnetic force remaining before the needle would go dormant for twelve hours. Five minutes was not enough to remove three poisoned needles. Five minutes was barely enough to save one person. But it was enough to try. --- The procedure took every ounce of Jack's strength. He worked through the night, moving from Diana's bedside to the poisoned needles one by one, using the Devil's Eye to draw each one free. With each needle removed, he felt a piece of himself die. His vision blurred. His hands shook. His heart beat like a trapped bird. By the time the fifth needle was free, dawn was breaking over Los Angeles, painting the sky in shades of gray and pink that seemed almost obscene in their beauty. Diana was alive. Her breathing was steady. Color had returned to her cheeks. But Jack could barely stand. Sarah caught him as he collapsed, holding him up with a strength that surprised him. "You did it," she whispered. "You actually did it." Jack looked at her through half-closed eyes and managed a weak smile. "Five minutes," he murmured. "I had five minutes." "And you used them well." He wanted to believe her. He wanted to believe that his life was worth something, that the Devil's Eye was a gift and not a curse. But as he drifted into unconsciousness, all he could think about was the truth he had discovered too late: the military program was still active, the poisoned needles were still being manufactured, and there was no one he could trust. Not Sarah. Not Dr. Fleming. Not himself. Jack Donovan closed his eyes and dreamed of darkness. CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
