The magnolias bloomed outside the DuBois plantation house, white flowers fat and heavy in the Louisiana humidity. Inside, Renee DuBois sat in a rocking chair on the front porch and watched the rain come in off the swamp. She was seventy-two years old. She was the last DuBois. And she had inherited a secret that had been killing her family for a hundred and fifty years. The letter had arrived on a Monday, carried by a man on a bicycle who rode through the swamp roads like a man who knew every shortcut. The letter contained a photograph of her niece Claire's corpse, pale and still in the swamp water, and a single sentence written in a hand that shook: The chain the DuBois family broke is resurrecting in the swamp. Renee put the photograph on the table and went inside to make tea. She made the tea slowly, the way she made everything slowly now. She measured the leaves. She boiled the water. She poured. She sat. She drank. The tea was bitter. Everything was bitter now. That night, she descended into the abattoir. The abattoir was not an abattoir in the traditional sense. It was a basement beneath the plantation house, built by her grandfather Colonel DuBois during the Civil War when he had more time and less sense. The walls were stone, damp and cold. The floor was packed earth. And lined along the walls, from floor to ceiling, were one hundred and twenty glass jars, each containing a shapeless blob of gray matter suspended in formaldehyde. Renee had seen these jars a thousand times. She had walked past them every day of her seventy-two years. But tonight, she looked at them differently. Tonight, she saw not jars but eyes. One hundred and twenty eyes, staring at her from the darkness, waiting for her to see them. She moved from jar to jar, candle in hand, studying the blobs inside. Most were the same: shapeless, gray, amorphous. But jar number forty-seven was different. The blob inside had a shape. A head. A body. Something that might have been a hand. She moved to jar number eighty-three. The blob inside had eyes. Two dark points in the gray matter, staring back at her with something between recognition and accusation. Renee sat on the stone floor and leaned against the wall. She closed her eyes and remembered her grandfather. Colonel DuBois. A brilliant man. A mad man. A man who had tried to create new species adapted to the Louisiana bayou, combining human DNA with animal genes, trying to build a race of beings that could survive the heat and the humidity and the disease. He had failed. Twelve thousand times, he had failed. And on the thirteenth thousand attempt, he had succeeded. But the success was not what he had wanted. It was something else. Something that existed outside human moral frameworks. Something that was not a person and not an animal and not anything the world had a name for. The rain intensified. Thunder shook the plantation house above. And from somewhere below the abattoir, deeper in the underground caves where Colonel DuBois had released his creation, Renee heard it. Laughter. Not human laughter. Not animal sound. A sound that was like a pair of long, sharp hands that seized her heart. The same sound she had heard every stormy night for seventy-two years, the sound she had learned to ignore, the sound she had built her life around. She stood up. She walked to the far wall of the abattoir, where a door she had never opened led deeper underground. She turned the key. She descended the stairs. The tunnel was dark. The air was warm and damp, smelling of earth and something else. Something alive. At the end of the tunnel was a chamber. And in the chamber, coiled around a stone pillar like a living column, was the creature. It was a snake, but not a snake. Its body was a massive python, scales dark as the swamp at midnight. But where the head should have been, there was a human face. A man's face, pale and hairless, with eyes that glowed faintly in the dark. The transition from human skin to snake scales was gradual, seamless. It uncoiled from the pillar and slithered toward her. It stopped a few feet away. Its human mouth opened. "The Colonel said reason is the truest courage," it said. Renee smiled. It was the first time she had smiled in three years. The first time she had smiled since Claire had died in the swamp. The first time she had smiled since the chain had broken. "I know," she said. She took the creature's hand—its human hand, protruding from the snake scales like a promise or a threat—and together they walked back up the tunnel, through the abattoir, past the one hundred and twenty jars, into the plantation house where the magnolias bloomed and the rain fell and the swamp breathed. Renee closed the basement door behind them. She sat in the rocking chair on the front porch. The creature coiled itself at her feet. The rain fell. The magnolias bloomed. And the swamp breathed. The chain was broken. But perhaps, in the darkness, it could be mended.
