The Eighth Trigger I keep a journal. Not a diary--a journal, which is different. A diary is for feelings. A journal is for facts. Facts I have observed, facts I have deduced, facts that might, if strung together properly, form a picture of something that makes sense. Right now, the picture looks like this: October 12: The fortune teller appeared again. Same crate, same tarot cards, same long coat. He said the same words: Tonight, you will eat the finest meal of your life. I have heard these words four times now. Each time, from a different person. Each time, in a different part of London. This is statistically impossible unless the words are not coming from different people. October 15: I ate at Lord Blackwood's table tonight. The food was excellent. The company was worse. Lord Blackwood smelled of lavender and deception. I noted seven lies during the dinner, each one detectable by a faint metallic tang in the air that only I seem to perceive. When I mentioned this to Dr. Moreau, my colleague at the hospital, he suggested that I might be experiencing "olfactory hallucinations secondary to severe stress and sleep deprivation." I told him he was a fool. He looked worried. October 18: I dreamed of a table last night. A long table, stretching into darkness. On the table were dishes I did not recognize--foods that smelled of earth and blood and something I could not name. I was eating, eating, eating, and with each bite, I saw faces. Faces of people I had never met but somehow knew. They were looking at me with expressions I could not read. Hunger? Accusation? Recognition? October 21: Lord Blackwood sent me to dine with his enemy, Lord Pemberton. I knew this before I left Blackwood's house. I knew it because I heard him talking to Dr. Moreau in the hallway, thinking he was alone. "Send the boy to Pemberton," Blackwood said. "Pemberton won't know the difference, and if he does, he'll have no proof." They think I am a pawn. A tool. A thing to be moved from table to table, eating their enemies' food, gathering their secrets. October 24: I am beginning to understand the pattern. Blackwood sends me to Pemberton. Pemberton's men beat me and cast me out. I am found by Blackwood's men. The cycle repeats. But who is sending whom? Who is using whom? The question has been gnawing at me like a rat in the walls. October 27: I confronted Dr. Moreau today. "Who are they?" I asked. "Blackwood, Pemberton, all of them. Who are they really?" He looked at me for a long time, and then he said something that has kept me awake ever since: "Grace, have you considered that the answer might be simpler than you think?" October 30: I have been conducting experiments. I send letters to Blackwood and Pemberton simultaneously, arranging dinners on the same night. I attend both. I watch them. And I have noticed something that makes my hands shake when I write this: Blackwood and Pemberton have never met. They have never been in the same room at the same time. And yet, they both refer to conversations we have had together, in private, that no third party could possibly have witnessed. Unless I told them. Unless I am the one arranging the dinners. Unless I am the one sending the invitations. November 2: I found my own handwriting in a drawer I thought was empty. A letter to Lord Pemberton, inviting him to dinner on November 1st. I have no memory of writing it. But the handwriting is mine. The ink is mine. The paper is from my desk. November 5: Dr. Moreau visited me today. He brought a colleague, a man named Dr. Breuer from Vienna, who specializes in "hysteria and dissociative disorders." Dr. Breuer spoke to me in a soft voice and asked me questions about my childhood, my dreams, my feelings. I told him I felt hungry. Always hungry. He nodded and wrote something in his notebook. November 8: I have been having blackouts. Periods of time that I cannot account for. Hours, sometimes days, that simply disappear from my memory. When I come to, I am somewhere I do not remember going, and there is food on the table, and plates are empty, and I feel full but not satisfied. November 11: I set a trap. I locked myself in my study and swallowed the key. I sat at my desk with a pen and paper and waited. And then I felt it--a pressure in my mind, like a door opening that I did not open. I watched, helpless, as my own hand picked up the pen and began to write. The handwriting was different. Sharper. Meaner. The words on the page read: They think they are using me. They are wrong. I am using them. I am using all of them. I am the hunger, and they are the food. Then the pressure lifted, and I was myself again, staring at the page in horror. November 14: I have put the pieces together. The fortune teller. Blackwood. Pemberton. Dr. Moreau. The dinners. The beatings. The cycle. They are all me. Every single one of them is a fragment of my own fractured mind, projected outward and experienced as separate people. The fortune teller is my subconscious, planting the seed. Blackwood is my ambition. Pemberton is my self-loathing. Dr. Moreau is my reason, trying to diagnose what my instincts already know. I am not being used. I am the user. I am the used. I am both, simultaneously, and the hunger I feel is the hunger of a mind trying to consume itself whole. November 17: I am writing this as my final entry. I have scheduled a dinner for next Tuesday. I have invited everyone--the fortune teller, Blackwood, Pemberton, Dr. Moreau, all of them. And I will sit at the head of the table, and I will eat, and I will finally understand what the hunger has been trying to tell me all along. The hunger is not for food. It is for wholeness. It is for the impossible dream of a mind that has split itself into pieces trying to put itself back together through consumption. I will eat them all, and in eating them, I will eat myself, and perhaps, just perhaps, I will finally be full. Or perhaps I will simply be empty in a new and more terrible way. I do not know. I may never know. The journal ends here. What follows is not writing. It is a record of something that happened to me, observed by someone who may or may not have been me. Tuesday: The dinner was magnificent. Seven courses, each one more elaborate than the last. I ate everything. I remember the first course--a soup that tasted of memory and salt. The second--a roast that tasted of guilt and rosemary. The third through sixth blurred together in a haze of flavor and recognition. Each bite was a face, a voice, a moment from a life that was mine and not mine. The seventh course was a dessert--a small cake, white frosting, simple. I took one bite, and I understood everything. There was no eighth trigger. There was only the hunger, and the eating, and the endless, impossible cycle of a mind trying to consume its own shadows. I am still here. Or someone who was here is still here. The journal is found in my desk, in my handwriting, dated November 17. There is no entry for Tuesday. There never will be. But sometimes, in the quiet hours before dawn, I feel the hunger again. Faint, but present. And I know that it will never go away. It is not a disease. It is not a curse. It is simply what I am: a mind that eats, and eats, and eats, trying to fill a void that was never meant to be filled. --- ## © 2026 - Authored by Z R ZHANG ( EL9507135 -- パスポート番号[ちゅうごく] 중국 여권 번호 Номер паспорта หมายเลขหนังสือเดินทาง Passnummer رقم جواز السفر CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
