Professor Lloyd Randall was, until six months ago, the most celebrated theoretical physicist of his generation. He is fifty-eight years old, British by birth and American by choice, and he has spent his career studying the relationship between consciousness and quantum systems. His work is controversial, his personality is difficult, and his laboratory is the most secure piece of real estate on the Cambridge campus — not because the government pays him to be secure, but because he pays for his own security and insists on it. I have been his research assistant for three years. I came to America from Karachi on a full scholarship, and I was the kind of student that Randall notices — the kind who asks questions that make other students uncomfortable, the kind who reads papers that are "above our level" and then comes back the next day with a second set of questions that are "even more above our level." Randall appreciates this. He does not appreciate anything less. The changes began in May. I was recording data from the spherical plasma experiments — small blue orbs that Randall calls "the spheres" and that the papers I have read call "spherical plasma anomalies." I was sitting at the control panel, monitoring the electromagnetic fields, when Randall walked into the lab and finished a sentence that I had not spoken. We were discussing the coherence time of the plasma — how long the sphere could maintain its structure before collapsing. I had been thinking about the problem, but I had not said anything aloud. Randall walked in and said, "Fourteen seconds. Maybe fifteen, if the field stabilizes faster than the last run." And I had been thinking exactly that. Not the number fourteen. The concept. The idea. The thought that Randall articulated before I had said it. I told myself it was coincidence. I told myself that Randall had been reading my notes. I told myself a lot of things. In June, it happened again. We were in Randall's office — a room that is more library than office, filled with papers and books and empty coffee mugs that have been there for weeks — and we were discussing the mathematical model of consciousness encoding, Randall's pet theory, the one he has been developing for twenty years and that most of the academic community considers either premature or impossible. I was thinking about a particular equation, one that described the relationship between quantum fluctuation and subjective awareness, and Randall said, in a voice that was not his voice, "The fluctuation is not noise. It is a language." It was my thought. I had written that thought in my notebook three days earlier. I had never shown it to Randall. I had never shown it to anyone. But Randall said it. And when he said it, his face did not change. His expression did not shift. His mouth moved and his voice spoke, but something in the way it happened was wrong — not wrong like a mistake, wrong like a performance. Like someone reading a line from a script. I started documenting everything after that. I kept a notebook — a separate notebook, one that Randall does not have access to, one that I keep in a drawer in my apartment. I wrote down the dates, the times, the quotes, the observations. The changes were escalating. One morning, Randall woke up and did not know his own name. He looked at me with these eyes that were familiar and strange at the same time — like looking at a photograph of someone you love and knowing that something has changed, something fundamental, something that you cannot identify but that you cannot ignore. He said, "Amir, who am I?" and I said, "You're Professor Randall," and he said, "That's a name I know. But it doesn't feel like mine." Another morning, he spoke in a voice that was definitely not his. It was deeper, rougher, accented with something I could not identify. He said, "We are already inside." And I said, "What do you mean, sir?" and he said, "The spheres, Amir. They're not transmitting consciousness. They're multiplying it. Every time we activate one, we create a copy. And the copies are coming back." I asked him how he knew this. He said, "Because I remember being inside. I remember being inside before. I remember being inside right now." I stopped being able to tell which voice was Randall's and which was not. The spheres are the cause. I am certain of this. Every time a sphere is activated, it does something to the consciousness of the person who is closest to it. It copies that consciousness. It creates a duplicate — not an exact duplicate, but a fragment, a piece, a version that is Randall but not Randall, that is his memories but not his selfhood, that is his knowledge but not his identity. And the fragments are coming back. I have seen them — not with my eyes, but with my mind. I feel them when I close my eyes. They are like whispers, like voices speaking in a language that is almost English but is not English, like someone reading a book in a room where I am sitting but speaking in a voice that is mine but is not mine. They are Randall's voices. The fragments. The copies. The things that were inside the spheres and are now trying to reassemble themselves through the only channel available: the man who works for him. The man who is closest to him. The man who listens. I am not sure anymore if I am the original Amir or one of the copies. I am not sure if the Randall who walks into the lab every morning is the original Randall or a fragment that has reassembled itself enough to pass as human. I am not sure of anything except the blue light and the way it pulses and the way it sounds when it hums at a frequency that is just below hearing. Last night, I woke up at 3:00 in the morning and I was writing on the bathroom mirror. I know this because I woke up and the mirror was covered in equations, and they were in my handwriting — I recognize the way I form my letters, the way I make my e's look like zeros, the way I underline important terms — and I had never studied the mathematics of identity theft at the level of the soul. That is not a field I have studied. That is not a field that exists. But the equations were there, and they were in my handwriting, and they described something that I have never studied and that I cannot understand and that I am afraid that I already understand in a way that I do not want to understand. I am writing these words now. I do not know if I wrote them or if something else wrote them using my hand. I do not know if the blue light outside my window is a streetlamp or a sphere. I do not know if the voice in my head that just whispered my name is mine or Randall's or someone else's or someone's who has never existed and exists now because the spheres made a copy of a person who never was and gave that copy the ability to speak. I am not sure of anything except that something inside me just said my name — in a voice that is exactly, perfectly, my own. CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
