My previous positive experience with an HP Pavilion laptop with similar features was the reason this model was purchased. Comparatively speaking the graphics are not as brilliant even with readjusting/customizing to the users preferences and the Beats Audio is not as rich or intense. For those considering purchasing this because it has the Leap Motion feature I would advise going out to a local HP retailer and trying the Leap Motion out first as it is really seems to be a very limited use `gimmick`. On this model the Leap Motion is an external plug-in module, (via the USB cords provided). There are a few preloaded apps that come with, more are available, some free, most are not and whatever you wish to add requires registration on the Leap Airspace site. The touch pad works acceptably but not as well as others I have previously used. For that reason I paired a previously purchased Microsoft Bluetooth mouse to it but I had problems with the Bluetooth connection randomly/intermittently dropping between apps and screens necessitating cycling the mouse power switch on and off. I tried updating the Bluetooth driver(s) and the mouse completely stopped working requiring what I believe was a driver rollback and pairing the mouse again. The Bluetooth connection continued to be a problem so a Logitech wireless mouse with a USB dongle was purchased to replace the problematic Bluetooth mouse connection. Mouse problem solved but at the expense of losing a USB port to the dongle.
On a positive note the HP SimplePass (finger swipe login) works well and as this is a Windows 8.1 machine logging in each and every time seems to be the <new> Windows way of life.
The laptop keeps popping up an error related to the smart power adapter not providing sufficient power, thats why i had to return it.
I work in IT and use a lot of different laptops. I have had many HP`s over time such as 4530s which this laptop replaced and a 8540w.
So the problem with the Envy is the edges. If you sit on the couch or similar and use this laptop it always feels very uncomfortable on your wrists. It feels like it is always cutting at you. One would assume that after making laptops for years that this would be a 101 design consideration. The laptop hardware seems even cheaper made than previous generation HP `consumer` laptops. Needless to say I`m not highly impressed with it.
The screen is nothing to get too excited about either. Not very good viewing angels and if you turn it up very bright when needed it really has a white wash look (bad contrast ratio).
So overall, the laptop is okay, but I would not buy it again. I would look at other options.
