Eleanor heard about it at breakfast, when her father's tea arrived cold because the maid — whose brother was a Deep Worker — had deliberately not lit the stove. "Thomas O'Brien," Silas Ashworth said, cutting his eggs with mechanical precision. "The Irish bastard has rallied the union. Every telegraph technician, every mine engineer, every valve operator from Leeds to Edinburgh has walked out. They want forty shillings a day and a six-hour shift. I told them they can keep their demands and starve." Eleanor studied her plate. "Father — the telegraph network is the only thing holding the southern mines together. If the valves aren't maintained—" "I have dock workers learning to operate the simple levers. It will take time, but—" He stopped, looked at her sharply. "What is it, Eleanor? You've got that look." She almost didn't tell him. But the blueprints were burning a hole in her retelling cabinet, and her father's certainty felt like a structure built on sand. "I found something in your study. Act III — The Arc Martha Wren was waiting for her in the telegraph office on the third floor of the Ashworth townhouse. Eleanor had come to learn Morse from the professional operators — a skill her father considered useful for a young woman of her station, like embroidery or piano. She had become, inadvertently, something more: a confidante to the operators, a bridge between the Tower and the Deep. "They're calling it Operation Severed Thread," Martha said without preamble. She was small — all the Deep Workers were, a generational thing from decades of living underground — but her voice carried a weight that filled the room. "Every telegraph line in Yorkshire. Every critical junction. We've placed corrosion discs on two hundred and forty-seven connection points. They'll all dissolve at the same time. At midnight, on the fifteenth." "The fifteenth is two days away." "Eighty-four hours." Eleanor sat down heavily. "My father is building a weapon. An electromagnetic device — he called it a Coil. It's in a mine shaft. "Then at least try." Act IV — The Echo The Holderness Cliffs rose from the North Sea like broken teeth, white chalk scarred by centuries of erosion. Eleanor stood at the edge of the cliff path, her horse trembling beneath her, the wind pulling at her coat like desperate hands. The station was a small building half-buried in the cliff face — a weathered wooden door set into a concrete shell, with a tall antenna array that pointed at the gray sky like a finger accusing God.
