The jazz played from the speaker above the bar, a saxophone weeping something I couldn't quite name. It was 1924, and Chicago was drunk on its own prosperity. Prohibition made everybody a criminal, which made everybody comfortable. I ran this place, the Blind Pig, out of a basement on State Street. The entrance was behind a bookshelf in a tailor's shop, and the password was a phrase I'd forgotten halfway through the evening. Frank O'Brien was the name on the door, though the door didn't exist. Nobody used doors down here. I was fifty-five years old, and I had buried a wife and a son in the same year. The flu took Mary in '18, and the Germans took Tommy in '18. Same year, different wars. The universe has a sense of humor. Old Joe was behind the bar when the man came in. Joe was a former boxer, round belly and all, but he still had hands like hammers. He was supposed to be the first line of defense, but I'd given him a drink that was stronger than usual, and he was currently passed out behind the counter, snoring into a pile of empty glasses. The man who walked in was called Hammer Kelly. Thirty-five, built like a brick wall, with a Thompson submachine gun slung across his back. He was sent by Moretti to collect a debt I couldn't pay. "O'Brien?" Kelly said. "That's me." "Moretti sends his regards." I poured two glasses of gin. Real gin, smuggled from Canada, not the bathtub poison they sold on the street. I pushed one across the counter. "Drink." Kelly took the glass but didn't drink. He watched me with eyes like polished stone. "You're not afraid." "I'm tired," I said. "Fear takes energy." He set the glass down and reached for his gun. I had already moved to the back of the bar, where I kept the good stuff. Not the gin—the alcohol. Pure grain alcohol, enough to fuel a small engine or start a very big fire. The second line of defense was the trapdoor behind the bar, leading to the wine cellar. Kelly had found it. I could tell by the way he was scanning the room, looking for exits. Smart man. Smarter than most. The third line was the ammonia I used to clean the glasses. I grabbed the bottle and threw it at his feet. It shattered, the fumes rising like a white ghost. Kelly coughed, his eyes watering, but he didn't fall. He just stood there, blinking, his hand still on his gun. "You're a stubborn old man," he said. "I'm a dead man," I corrected. "There's a difference." I grabbed the bottle of alcohol and splashed it across Kelly's coat. He smelled it too late. I struck a match. The fire caught instantly. Kelly screamed, stumbling backward, his Thompson clattering to the floor. I grabbed the iron bar from behind the bar and swung it at his legs. He went down hard. The Blind Pig went up like a torch. Flames devoured the shelves, the bottles, the memories of a thousand nights. I ran for the back exit, the heat pushing me forward. When I emerged into the street, the jazz was still playing from the tailor's shop above. A saxophone weeping something I couldn't quite name. I stood on the sidewalk and watched my life burn. Fifty-five years of drinking, of playing music, of pretending that losing everything was just part of the game. All of it gone in five minutes. A man came up beside me. Councilman Danny, his face pale in the firelight. "Frank," he said. "I'm sorry." I looked at him. "You sent him, didn't you?" He didn't answer. He didn't need to. I turned back to the fire. The Blind Pig was gone. Joe was gone. Everything was gone. But I was still here. And in a city like Chicago, being alive was its own kind of victory. Or its own kind of curse. I hadn't decided which. The jazz played on. CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
