I. Arthur woke at six. The light was gray. It was always gray in Wyoming in November. He made coffee. He drank coffee. He put on his coat. He walked to the barn. The barn was two hundred feet from the house. The path was worn into the ground by forty years of walking the same distance at the same time. Arthur walked it in four minutes. He had timed himself once. He had forgotten the time. He remembered the walking. II. The Companion sat in the corner of the barn, on a wooden platform that Arthur had built for it in 1973. It was about four feet tall. It was made of metal and wood and things Arthur could no longer name. It had no face. It had hands — or something like hands. It had a chest that opened and closed, slowly, like breathing. Arthur wound the key. Seven turns. He had counted. Seven. He wiped the Companion's casing with a cloth. The cloth was gray. It had been gray for years. It was still gray. He sat beside the Companion on a wooden crate. He talked. "The wheat didn't come up," he said. "Too dry. The rain came too late. Or maybe it didn't come at all. I can't remember." The Companion did not answer. It never did. "The wind is strong today," Arthur said. "Stronger than yesterday. Stronger than the day before. The sky is very wide." The Companion did not answer. III. Neighbors drove by sometimes. They waved. Arthur waved back. They never stopped. One day a man in a blue truck stopped. He was young. He had a beard. He looked at the house, looked at the barn, looked at Arthur. "Morning," he said. "Morning," Arthur said. "You live here alone?" "Yes." "Your wife —" "Eleanor died. Ten years." "Your children —" "Tommy died. Twenty years. Car accident. He was nineteen." The young man nodded. He didn't know what to say. Arthur understood. He had been on the other side of this conversation many times. He knew what people wanted to hear and what they were afraid to say. "I'm buying the farm," the young man said. "From the bank. I haven't — I haven't moved in yet." "I know," Arthur said. "Are you — are you leaving soon?" "Yes." The young man looked at the barn. "What's in there?" "Nothing," Arthur said. "Nothing important." The young man nodded. He got back in his truck. He drove away. Arthur watched him go. The truck kicked up dust on the road. The dust settled. The wind blew across the plains. The sky was very wide. IV. Arthur got sick in March. He didn't go to the barn for three days. He lay in bed. The light was gray. It was always gray in Wyoming in March. He drank water. He didn't drink coffee. Coffee was too far away. On the fourth day, he got up. His hands shook. His legs shook. Everything shook. He put on his coat. He walked to the barn. The path was worn into the ground. He walked it in six minutes. He had forgotten how fast he used to be. He wound the key. His hands shook. The key turned. One turn. Two turns. Three turns. Four turns. Five turns. Six turns. Seven turns. He wiped the Companion's casing. The cloth was gray. He sat beside the Companion on the wooden crate. He talked. "I'm tired," he said. The Companion did not answer. He closed his eyes. The wind blew across the plains. The sky was very wide. He did not open his eyes again. V. The farm was sold. The young man from the blue truck signed the papers in Casper. He drove to the farm the next weekend. The house was empty. The furniture was gone. The kitchen table was bare except for a letter. He picked up the letter. It was addressed to him. He didn't open it. He put it down. He walked to the barn. The barn was cold. It smelled of wood and metal and something else — something old and forgotten. In the corner, on a wooden platform, he saw the Companion. He didn't know what it was. It looked like a machine. It looked like something his grandfather might have built. It looked like something that had been important to someone, once. He stood there for a long time. The wind blew across the plains. The sky was very wide. He didn't touch it. He walked back to the house. He packed his truck. He drove away. He left the Companion in the barn. The wind blew across the plains. The sky was very wide. © 2026 - Authored by Z R ZHANG ( EL9507135 -- パスポート番号[ちゅうごく] 중국 여권 번호 Номер паспорта หมายเลขหนังสือเดินทาง Passnummer رقم جواز السفر CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
