I. The mill was dying. Thomas Higgins knew this the way he knew his own name — not with certainty, exactly, but with the slow, grinding certainty of something you've been told so many times that it stops being news and starts being weather. You don't react to weather. You just put on a coat or don't. He was fifty-two years old, a quality control inspector at the Youngstown Steel Works for twenty-eight years, and he had watched the mill change from something that made things to something that made announcements about things it might make next quarter. The mechanical workers were in the basement of the abandoned east wing, a place Thomas only went because he was looking for copper wire to sell. He found three of them, lined up against the wall like soldiers waiting for a war that had already ended. They were not impressive. They were metal frames, maybe five feet tall, with basic AI circuits that looked like something from a science fiction magazine — the kind Thomas used to read when he was twenty and believed the future was going to be shiny and new. These were rusty. These were crude. These were the kind of machines that jammed if you looked at them wrong. Thomas stood there for a long time, looking at them, thinking about what it meant that a company that was closing down a steel mill was also quietly replacing human workers with machines that couldn't even do the job right. II. He mentioned it at a union meeting three nights later. The union hall was above a closed-down grocery store, and the chairs were uncomfortable and the coffee was worse. Frank DeLuca was running the meeting, which meant he was running it the way Frank DeLuca ran everything — with the energy of a man who had decided early in life that enthusiasm was a substitute for competence and never bothered to check whether that was true. "So the company's got robots," Frank said, when Thomas had finished describing what he'd seen. "Big deal. Robots don't take lunches. Robots don't complain about safety. Robots don't —" He stopped. "Actually, that might be a problem. Can robots complain about safety?" "They can't do anything," Thomas said. "They're broken. Half of them haven't worked in months." "Then what are they doing in the basement?" "I don't know. Storing them? Forgetting about them?" Frank shrugged. "If they're broken, they're not replacing anyone. So it doesn't matter." Thomas looked around the room at the faces he had known for twenty years — men and women who had spent their lives with their hands in machinery, who understood metal and grease and the honest weight of a tool in your palm. Most of them looked tired. Some of them looked afraid. A few looked like they had already decided that whatever happened next wasn't going to matter. "One guy asked me," Thomas said, "if the machines take lunches. I don't know, Frank. I don't know anything anymore." Frank looked at him for a moment, and for a second — just a second — Thomas saw something in his eyes that wasn't cynicism. Something like recognition. Then it was gone, and Frank was smiling that smile that meant he had decided what he was going to say and nothing you said was going to change it. "Listen, Tommy. The company's moving to another state. That's the real story. Robots or no robots, this mill is done. You want to worry about that. Not basement machines." III. Thomas tried to write a letter to the company. He sat at his kitchen table on a Sunday evening, Linda in the next room watching television at a volume that suggested she was trying to drown out something she couldn't name, and he held a pen over a blank sheet of paper and didn't know how to start. How do you describe something that isn't impressive but is still wrong? How do you write about machines that are too crude to be threatening but too present to be ignored? How do you say, without sounding like a man who is afraid of the future because he has spent his whole life building the past? He wrote: Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to inform you that I have discovered mechanical workers in the basement of the east wing. He crossed it out. It sounded like an accusation. It sounded like he cared. He wasn't sure he cared. He was tired. That was the truth. He was tired and the mill was dying and his son wanted money for a car and his daughter needed new shoes and the world was heavy and small and there was no word big enough to describe how small it felt. He wrote: I wanted you to know. He crossed that out too. Know what? He didn't know what. Mike came into the kitchen. He was seventeen, all elbows and knees and the kind of hunger that comes from being a boy who is growing into a man and isn't sure which one he's supposed to be yet. "Dad," he said. "Can you help me with my math homework?" Thomas put down the pen. "What kind of math?" "Algebra. I don't get it." Thomas looked at the paper. He looked at his son. He got up, pulled out a chair, and sat down next to him. They worked on the algebra together. Thomas was not good at algebra. He was good at metal. He was good at knowing when a weld was going to hold and when it was going to fail. But algebra was a different language, and he had never learned it, and now it didn't matter. "See," Thomas said, pointing at the page. "If x equals this, then y has to be —" He stopped. He couldn't remember. He had forgotten. Not the algebra — the certainty that he would ever need algebra. That his life would ever require anything other than what he already knew. "Never mind," he said. "You figure it out." IV. They called him into the boss's office on a Friday morning. There was no boss — Mr. Kowalski never showed up in person, never answered the phone, never existed anywhere except on paychecks and legal documents. The man who spoke for Mr. Kowalski was a young guy named Davis who had a tie and a smile and a way of saying things that meant nothing. "Thomas," Davis said, sitting behind a desk that was too clean for a steel mill. "We appreciate your twenty-eight years of service. You've been a valuable member of this team." Thomas nodded. He had heard this before. He knew what came next. "As you may be aware, the Youngstown facility is closing. We're relocating to —" "I know," Thomas said. "You told us." "Right. Well. We're sorry it's come to this. But —" Davis paused for effect, which is what people do when they have practiced this speech in a mirror and want you to believe the pause is spontaneous and heartfelt. "— the steel industry is changing. Automation. Globalization. You've heard the terms." "I've heard them," Thomas said. "We're sorry we couldn't —" "It's fine," Thomas said. And it wasn't fine. But it was fine in the way that fine means when you're fifty-two years old and you've stopped expecting things to be anything other than what they are. He packed his desk on his last day. He put a wrench in a box. He put a photograph of Linda and the kids in a box. He put the wrench back on the desk and didn't pack it. He left it there, on the clean surface of a desk that would belong to someone else on Monday. He drove to Indiana on a Monday morning. The new mill was smaller — smaller buildings, smaller payroll, smaller future. He passed the old Youngstown mill on the way out. He didn't look at it. In the basement of the abandoned east wing, the mechanical workers kept running. They were crude and unreliable and far from the advanced machines in the science fiction magazines. Nobody was watching them. Nobody cared. The rust spread slowly, eating at the brass and the copper and the steel, the way rust always does — patiently, inevitably, without malice or purpose. The wire vibrated in the wind. The rust spread.
