It always was when she spoke into the comm-array. The algorithm she had designed would give her words shape and colour and rhythm. She herself was merely the instrument. Behind her, Dr. Linus Zhao was staring at the planet with an expression she had learned to recognise over six waking cycles. It was not wonder. Wonder was too simple a word. It was something closer to grief — the grief of a man who has spent his entire professional life searching for something and who now that he has found it realises that finding it changes nothing. "How many cycles until orbital insertion?" Amara asked. "Fourteen hours. After that, the committee will want a full report." "The committee has never looked at the data." "No. They would not need to. They have the results." Amara did not respond. She adjusted the frequency on the comm-array and began running diagnostic tests. The jazz-based algorithm she had spent fourteen years designing — during the dormancy cycles, when the rest of the crew slept and she remained awake for her rotating watch — was ready. It would allow the Charybdis to communicate with any intelligent life they encountered across distances of up to two hundred light-years. It worked on improvisation principles: each transmission was unique, unpredictable, but always coherent. Like jazz, the algorithm was both individual and collective. Solo and ensemble. She had shared it with Linus three waking cycles ago, in the ship's observation deck, while they watched the stars move past the viewport in their slow, patient procession. He had listened in silence for twenty minutes and then said: "You have built a language out of music." "I have built a music out of language," she corrected. He had nodded. And then, which was the most he had ever said to her about anything personal: "It is beautiful." She had not responded. Not because she disagreed. Because the word "beautiful" felt inadequate for something she had designed to bridge the gap between civilisations. Now, fourteen hours before orbital insertion, Amara returned to the array and ran the final diagnostics. The algorithm was operational. The transmission suite was operational. Everything was ready. Except the committee's orders, which had not yet arrived. They arrived six hours later, via a burst transmission from the Colonial Administration. The message was brief, professional, and devastating: "Vessel Charybdis: upon confirmation of biological findings, commence mineral extraction operations on the northern hemisphere. Priority Alpha. Report findings and proceed with extraction schedule. — Director Marcus Hale, Colonial Administration." Mineral extraction. The words were clean and administrative. Beneath them lay a different story: heavy machinery. Drilling rigs. Atmospheric processors. The destruction of an ecosystem that had existed for four billion years, reduced to raw materials for human industry. Amara read the message once. Then she read it again. Then she placed it on the console and walked to the observation deck. Linus was already there. He was looking at the planet. "They want to mine it," he said. It was not a question. "They want to mine everything." "I know what they want." They stood in silence for a long time. The planet turned below them, slow and patient, unaware that human beings had arrived and that they had opinions about what to do with it. "Do you remember what I told you about the algorithm?" Amara asked finally. "You said it was built on improvisation." "You said I had built a language out of music." "I did." "I want to send the algorithm to Earth. Not the data report. Not the spectral analysis. The algorithm itself. Encoded in it will be — " She stopped. She was choosing words carefully. "It will be a statement. A statement about what we found here and what we are about to destroy." Linus turned to look at her. "That is not in your job description." "Nothing about this is in my job description." "I cannot support this." "I did not ask you to." "But I cannot oppose it either." Amara considered this. Linus was a scientist. His entire professional identity was built on observation, documentation, reporting. He could not take an action that violated his professional ethics. But he could also not take an action that violated his contract with the Colonial Administration, which carried penalties that would end his career. "Then do nothing," she said. That was how it happened. Not with drama. Not with confrontation. With absence. Amara went to the communications array and encoded the algorithm into a burst transmission destined for Earth — for any musician, any scientist, any person who might receive it and decode it and understand that four billion years of alien life had existed on a blue-and-white planet in the Kepler system, and that human beings had arrived and chosen gold over existence. Linus did not stop her. He did not help her. He stood in the observation deck and watched the planet turn and said nothing. The transmission took four minutes to encode and one second to send. It left the Charybdis at the speed of light, heading toward Earth, 140 light-years away. It would arrive in 140 years. By then, Amara and Linus would both be dead. The planet would have been mined. The single-celled organisms would have been vaporised by atmospheric processors. The Charybdis would have moved on to the next discovery. But the transmission would keep traveling. Amara watched the status indicator change from "encoding" to "transmitted" and felt nothing. Not relief. Not satisfaction. Nothing. The action was complete. It existed now in the space between the Charybdis and Earth, moving through the void at a speed that neither of them could comprehend, carrying a message that neither of them could fully articulate. "The committee will be asking for a report," Linus said. "Yes." "What will you tell them?" Amara looked at the readout one more time. The biosignatures were still there — faint, simple, persistent. Four billion years of life in shallow pools, waiting for somebody to arrive and notice them. "I will tell them the truth," she said. "I will tell them we found life. Simple life. I will tell them the committee ordered extraction. I will not tell them about the transmission. And I will not tell them that I am staying." Linus stared at her. "You are staying?" "I am staying. Not as a protest. Not as a statement. I am staying because — " She paused. For the first time in the entire conversation, she was choosing words that were not technical or professional or strategic. "I am staying because someone should be here when the last of them dies." Linus did not respond. He turned and walked away. He would remain on the Charybdis. He would file the report. He would return to Earth. He would continue his work. Amara remained at the communications array. She ran one final diagnostic on the transmission suite. Then she sat down in the chair that was not designed for sitting, closed her eyes, and listened to the static of the Kepler system — the cosmic background noise that had been singing since the beginning of the universe, long before single-celled organisms existed in shallow pools, long before human beings arrived with their orders and their drills and their greed. She listened. She recorded. She filed the recordings under a category that did not exist in the Colonial Administration's taxonomy.
