Dale McCready was forty-five years old and he had spent the last twenty of them fixing things that were already broken. He worked out of a garage in Detroit that had once been an auto body shop and was now something worse: a place where engines went to die slowly. The sign out front said McCREADY'S AUTO REPAIR in letters that had been painted by a man named Frank in 1978 and had not been touched since. The R in McCREADY looked like an N. The Y in REPAIR had fallen off somewhere around 1985 and nobody had bothered to replace it. Dale didn't mind. He fixed what he could and ignored the rest. That was the philosophy that had carried him through twenty years of rust and grease and engines that would never run again. On a Tuesday in March, his phone rang. It was a landline, mounted on the wall next to the workbench, the kind that came with a curly cord and a bell that sounded like a dying cat. Dale let it ring four times before picking it up. "McCReady's," he said. The Y was missing, as usual. "Is this Dale McCready?" said a voice on the other end. Male, middle-aged, with the flat tone of someone who had spent years giving orders to people who didn't want to hear them. "Yeah." "This is Frank Delgado. Department of Aerospace. We need you." Dale looked at the engine on his workbench. It was a V8 from a 1967 Mustang, or at least it had been once. Now it was a collection of rusted parts and broken dreams that sat on his bench like a monument to everything he couldn't fix. "What do you need me to do?" he said. "There's a project," Delgado said. "We need someone who understands legacy systems. Someone who can work with equipment that hasn't been maintained in a while." Dale thought about the Mustang. He thought about the twenty years he'd spent in NASA's maintenance division before the budget cuts and the layoffs and the slow erosion of everything he'd ever cared about. He thought about the rust on his garage walls, the rust on his tools, the rust that seemed to be spreading from the outside in, into his bones. "When do I start?" he said. --- The aerospace facility was in Huntsville, Alabama, at the edge of a town that had once been proud and was now something else. Dale drove down I-65 from Detroit, watching the landscape change from rust belt to sun belt, from abandoned factories to abandoned everything, from a country that built things to a country that used to build things. The facility was called the Redstone Arsenal, and it looked like a museum that had been left open after closing time. The buildings were low and concrete and covered in a fine layer of red dust that came from the Alabama soil. The satellite dishes pointed at the sky like flowers that had forgotten which way was up. Delgado met him at the gate. He was fifty-something, thin, with the pale skin of a man who had spent his career indoors and the nervous energy of someone who was constantly looking over his shoulder. "Dale," he said, extending a hand. "Thanks for coming." "You said it was urgent." "It is. Or it was, before it wasn't anymore. Which is to say, it's urgent now because it was supposed to be done three years ago." Dale followed him into Building 4, which smelled of stale coffee and old paper. The corridors were lined with filing cabinets and framed photographs of men in uniforms who looked like they had known what they were doing at some point in their lives. "The project is called Solar Disruption," Delgado said. "It was initiated in 2018. The original concept was developed by a team at MIT. The hardware was partially manufactured. Then the funding dried up, the team dispersed, and the project was... shelved." Dale looked at him. "Shelved." "Archived," Delgado corrected. "Which is the same thing, but with better connotations." They arrived at a hangar at the far end of the facility. Inside, on a platform surrounded by cables and monitors that looked like they belonged in a museum, sat a cylinder of copper and steel about the size of a small car. It was covered in a fine layer of dust, but it was intact. The metal still had a sheen, like something that had been well-made once and was waiting to be made useful again. "That's it?" Dale said. "That's it." Dale walked around the device, running his hands along its surface. The metal was cool and smooth in places, rough and pitted in others. He could feel the craftsmanship beneath the dust—the precision of the welds, the alignment of the components, the care that had gone into building something that was supposed to change the world. "It's beautiful," he said. "It's obsolete," Delgado said. "The technology is ten years old. The models are outdated. The people who designed it are retired or dead or working for the competition." Dale looked at him. "Then why am I here?" "Because you're the only one who knows how to make it work." --- The work took fourteen days. Dale slept on a cot in the break room, ate from a microwave that only worked if you hit it on the side, and spent every waking hour inside the hangar, taking the device apart and putting it back together and taking it apart again. Sarah Miller, a young technician who had graduated from community college six months ago and already looked ten years older, watched him work. She was twenty-three, bright, and desperate to prove that she was more than her diploma. "How do you know what you're doing?" she asked on the third day. Dale didn't look up from the engine he was rebuilding. "I don't. I just know what not to do. That's how you learn. You try things, they break, you figure out why, and you try something else." "But what if you're wrong?" "Then everything breaks. And you start over." Sarah was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "My father was in the Air Force. He used to talk about the old days, when things were built to last. He said everything was solid back then, like you could count on it. I don't think he understood that solid things rust too." Dale tightened a bolt and set down his wrench. "Solid things rust faster than you think," he said. "Because you believe they won't." --- On the fourteenth day, the device was ready. Dale stood in the hangar, surrounded by tools and spare parts and the smell of hot metal, and looked at what he had done. The cylinder gleamed in the fluorescent light, clean and precise and alive. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, and he knew it would never be seen again. Colonel Patterson arrived on the fifteenth day. He was the same man who had overseen the project at MIT eleven years ago, or at least a man who looked exactly like him. Dale didn't ask questions. He had learned not to ask questions. "It's ready," Dale said. Patterson nodded. "When can it be activated?" "Whenever you want." Patterson looked at him for a long moment. Then he said, "I'm going to give you a piece of advice, Dale. It's free. You can ignore it." "Always do." "Don't think about what this does. Don't think about what happens when it's turned on. Just build what you're told to build, and go home, and fix your cars, and don't think about it." Dale considered this. He thought about the Mustang on his workbench in Detroit, the engine that would never run again. He thought about the rust on his garage walls, spreading from the outside in. He thought about the device in front of him, beautiful and obsolete and about to change the world in ways that nobody would understand. "I don't think about it," he said. And for once, he meant it. --- The activation was scheduled for a Friday. Dale was not invited to watch. He was told to return to Detroit, to wait for further instructions, to not contact anyone about the project. He drove north on I-65, watching the Alabama landscape blur past his window, thinking about nothing. He got to Detroit on Saturday. The garage was cold—the heating still didn't work—and the Mustang sat on his workbench like a coffin. He sat down in his chair, the one with the spring poking through the upholstery, and picked up the phone. It rang once before someone answered. He didn't need to ask who it was. "It worked," Delgado said. His voice was flat, professional, the voice of a man who had delivered a piece of bad news a thousand times and had learned to make it sound neutral. "How?" Dale said. "Global blackout. All frequencies. Radio, television, satellite, everything. It's... extensive." Dale looked at the Mustang. He looked at the rust on his walls. He looked at the Y that was missing from his sign out front. "How long will it last?" he said. "That's not something anyone knows." Dale hung up the phone. He sat in the cold garage and listened to the silence. It was the kind of silence that came when the world stopped talking to itself, when the radios went quiet and the televisions went dark and all that was left was the sound of your own breathing and the distant hum of a city that didn't know it had gone blind. He thought about the device, sitting in a hangar in Huntsville, warm and alive and waiting for the next time someone needed to make the world go quiet. He thought about the soldiers in uniform, the pilots in cockpits, the sailors on ships, all of them suddenly alone in a world that had forgotten how to speak. He thought about nothing. That was what he did. He thought about nothing and fixed what he could and ignored the rest. On Monday, a truck arrived from the government with a new heating unit for his garage. No one called to tell him it was coming. It just appeared, like rain, like rust, like everything else that happened whether you wanted it to or not. Dale installed it himself. The garage was warm for the first time in three years. He turned on the heater, sat down in his chair, and picked up a wrench. There was a Ford F-150 in the bay that needed a new carburetor. It was an old truck, the kind that used to be solid and was now something else. But Dale knew how to make old things run again. He knew the tricks, the shortcuts, the things that worked when nothing else did.
