The fog rolled off the bayou like a slow breath, and through it came the sound of a piano playing something that sounded like grief trying to remember how to be music. Madeleine Beaumont sat on the porch of Oakhaven plantation, watching the mist curl around the cypress trees like ghosts refusing to leave. She was twenty-four, half-Creole, half-everything-else-that-no-one-cared-to-name, and she was the only child of Jean-Louis Beaumont, the wealthiest planter in the parish. Her father was known throughout Louisiana as a good man. He visited the family burial ground on Crow Hill every year without fail, standing before his parents' tombstones in the rain. He loved his wife Celeste with a devotion that made the local priests nod approvingly. And Madeleine—Madeleine was his heart walking around in human skin. He refused every suitor from New Orleans to Mobile, declaring that his daughter would never leave Oakhaven. These were his virtues. Everyone in Louisiana knew them. And Jean-Louis Beaumont wanted them to know. Julian Harrington arrived at Oakhaven on a Tuesday, dressed in a linen suit that had seen better days and carrying a leather satchel full of books on agricultural reform. He said he was a scholar from the North, come to study Southern farming methods. He said his name was Julian Blackwood, though the "Blackwood" was a fiction he'd picked up from a half-Italian grandmother he barely remembered. In truth, he was Julian Harrington, son of Colonel Harrington, the former Union officer who had lost everything during Reconstruction and had spent the last twenty years plotting revenge against men like Jean-Louis Beaumont. But Julian didn't know that yet. When he first arrived at Oakhaven, he thought Beaumont's virtues were genuine. He thought the old man's devotion to his parents, his wife, his daughter was the real thing. He was wrong. But it took him longer than it should have to figure it out. --- Colonel Harrington's strategy was elegant in its cruelty. Attack Beaumont's three virtues, one by one, and watch the great planter crumble. The first attack came through Crow Hill. A group of sharecroppers, desperate and angry, occupied the Beaumont family cemetery. Their leader, a man named Baptiste, stood before the tombstones with a shotgun and declared that Beaumont would surrender himself as hostage, or he would destroy the graves. Beaumont rode to Crow Hill alone, as he had always done. When he saw Baptiste standing before the tombstones, he dismounted and walked forward with his hands open. "I am Jean-Louis Beaumont," he said. "Let the dead rest. Take me instead." Baptiste, moved by this display of devotion, lowered his shotgun. Beaumont forgave him, took him into his service as overseer, and the incident became a story told with admiration throughout the parish. But Julian, who had witnessed the scene from a distance, felt a chill. The sharecroppers had been too well-organized, too precisely placed. They had not come by chance. They had been sent. The Colonel's second strike came through Celeste. A letter arrived from Colonel Harrington's wife—Celeste's cousin—speaking of shared girlhood, of the bonds between families, of the hope that Beaumont would show mercy in the coming conflict. Celeste begged her husband. "Please, Jean-Louis. Marie says the Colonel's wife is suffering. Can you not show mercy?" Beaumont looked at his wife's face—so full of the trust that no wife should betray. He placed a hand on her cheek. "Mercy," he said quietly, "is a luxury that men in my position cannot afford." But he did not stop the attack. --- The final strike came on a night when the fog rolled in from the bayou like a living thing. The Colonel's men surrounded Oakhaven. And at their head was Julian—no longer Julian Blackwood, but Julian Harrington, son of the Colonel, revealed at last. "Papa," Julian said, his blade pointed at Beaumont's throat. "Release my father and the other planters, and we will negotiate. I will ensure you live as a private man. I am Madeleine's fianc-e-I will not destroy you completely." Beaumont looked at the young man he had welcomed into his home, the man he had trusted, the man who had held Madeleine in his arms and sworn eternal love. "You really believe I would let you take my daughter?" Beaumont asked. "I believe you love her." "I let everyone believe I love her." Beaumont's voice was cold as the bayou water. "That was the point." He turned to the guards. "Send the order. Destroy them all. Not a single survivor." The guards charged. Julian's men, confident in their advantage, were caught in a trap from which there was no escape. They had believed they held the power—the hostage, the siege, the moral high ground. They had no idea they were already dead. But in the chaos, Julian drew his blade and turned it toward Madeleine, who stood in the doorway with her mother. "Stop!" he screamed. "Touch her and I kill them both!" Beaumont did not flinch. "Order—disobey, and be shot." The guards charged. Julian's screams were lost in the sound of steel and dying men. Madeleine's cry of "Papa, do you not love me anymore?" was swallowed by the fog. When it was over, Beaumont stood alone in the rain, the silver mirror in his hand. He had won. He would keep his land, his power, his legacy. But Madeleine lay dead on the porch, and Celeste, who had watched from the tower, would never speak again. --- Two years later, Beaumont sat on the porch of Oakhaven, watching the fog roll off the bayou. The piano had stopped playing. The cypress trees stood silent. The sharecroppers had left, one by one, until only Baptiste remained, tending a garden that nobody asked him to tend. Beaumont picked up the silver mirror—Madeleine's favorite thing, a gift from Celeste on their wedding day. He looked into it and saw a man who had won every battle but lost every war. He had let everyone believe he had weaknesses so they would foolishly try to use them against him. And he had won. But the victory tasted like bayou water: brackish, cold, and leaving a film on your tongue that no amount of rinsing could remove.
