If the sensors said Jupiter's gravitational field was increasing at a rate of four percent per hour, then either the sensors were lying or the planet was about to tear their moon apart. "Recalibrate," he told the tech on Anchor Three, a kid named Ruiz who couldn't have been more than twenty-two and whose hands were shaking so badly he could barely hold the wrench. "I recalibrated three times already, Chief. It's not the sensors. It's the planet." Jack climbed the scaffolding to the primary gravimetric array and looked at the numbers himself. Ruiz was right. The readings were real. Jupiter was pulling harder, and the five Gravitational Anchors scattered across Europa's surface—the only structures massive enough to hold the moon's orbit in place—were failing one by one. Anchor One had gone dark eighteen hours ago. They'd lost Rodriguez and his crew when the anchor's support struts buckled. Jack had watched the telemetry from the command module, watched the last transmission from Anchor One turn to static as the structure collapsed under forces it was never designed to handle. "Five hundred and forty kilometers to Anchor Two," said Captain Delaney over the comms. Delaney ran the mining operation for United Resources, and her voice carried the particular brand of calm that comes from knowing you have options other people don't. "We need you there in six hours. Ruiz, you're with Morrison. Move it." Six hours across broken ice to an anchor that was probably already failing, with a crew of two, in a rover that had seen better days. Jack had done this job for twenty years, and he'd grown to hate the particular flavor of desperation that defined life on Europa's surface. Above ground—above the ice, above the moon, above everything—Jupiter hung in the black sky like a guilty god, beautiful and indifferent and slowly tearing their world apart. The rover's treads ate through three kilometers of ice before the first warning light flashed. Anchor Two wasn't just failing. It was being pulled apart from the inside. "Look at this," Ruiz said, staring at the structural analysis screen. "The anchor's foundation is hollow. There's a cavity under the ice where the anchor drills in. Someone—or something—has been eating away at the support structure from below." "Below?" Jack killed the rover's engine and sat very still. "You're saying there's a cavity under Europa's ice that's growing? That's not possible. The ice—" "Is three kilometers thick and full of liquid water channels. I went to technical school, Chief. I know how water and pressure work. Whatever is happening down there, it's natural. Or it was, until Jupiter started pulling harder." Jack stared at the screen. Six hours across broken ice. Two people. An anchor that might hold or might not. Five hundred and forty kilometers to the next one, and three after that. He thought about his daughter in Mars City, seventeen years old and trying to forget that her father spent his life fixing things that the people who paid him didn't actually care about fixing. "Let's go to work," he said. --- They worked for eighteen hours straight. The cavity under Anchor Two was massive—easily a hundred meters across, carved into the ice by water channels that had been flowing for years, possibly decades, slowly eroding the anchor's foundation. Jack and Ruiz reinforced what they could with emergency support struts and structural gel, but the gel would only hold for maybe a week before Jupiter's increasing pull overwhelmed it too. "It's not enough," Ruiz said, collapsing against the rover's chassis and staring up at the anchor's support struts. "None of this is enough. We can fix this anchor, and the next one will have the same problem. And the one after that. Until all five are gone and Europa snaps out of orbit like a rubber band." Jack pulled himself up and looked at the five gravimetric anchors spread across the moon's surface like the ribs of some great dead creature. They were the only things standing between United Resources and a slow, cold death. They were also, probably, not going to be enough. "There's a way to make them last longer," Jack said slowly. "We synchronize them. Instead of each anchor holding independently, we wire them together into a single network. If one starts to fail, the others compensate. It's like a harness—if one strap breaks, the weight shifts to the remaining straps instead of everything collapsing at once." Ruiz's eyes lit up. "You mean a distributed load system? That could work. But it means we have to go to all five anchors and install coupling hardware at each one." "We have maybe four days before the gel on this anchor fails. Four days to fix four more anchors. In this rover. Across this terrain." Ruiz didn't flinch. "Then we'd better start driving." --- They reached Anchor Three on the second day. The cavity there was even larger than at Anchor Two—over two hundred meters of ice eaten away, leaving the anchor's base suspended over a dark void that went down into Europa's depths. Jack peered over the edge and felt a brief wave of vertigo so intense he nearly fell in himself. "Anchor Four is a mess," he said, checking his readings. "Anchor Five might already be compromised. We're looking at maybe two out of five that we can save." "That's still better than zero," Ruiz said, though his voice didn't convince either of them. They worked Anchor Three for sixteen hours, installing the coupling hardware and connecting it to Anchor Two. When the network was live, Jack watched the readouts as Anchor Two's failing strut transferred its load to Anchor Three, which transferred some of its load to Anchor Four's coupling point. The system held. Barely. But it held. By the time they reached Anchor Four on the third evening, both of them were running on caffeine and adrenaline. The rover had broken down twice, and Jack had spent four hours in freezing temperatures under its chassis, replacing a fuel line with fingers that had gone numb from cold. Anchor Four was the worst. The cavity had consumed the entire northern support quarter of the structure, and the anchor was tilting at a dangerous angle. Ruiz was the one who found the sabotage marker—a tiny etching on the anchor's primary strut that marked it as different from the others. "Chief," Ruiz said, his voice shaking for a completely different reason now. "Someone did this. Intentionally. Look—the etching matches the symbols they use on the Council-owned infrastructure projects. This isn't natural erosion. Someone cut into the anchor's foundation." Jack felt something cold settle in his stomach, colder than the Europa night. Someone was deliberately destroying the anchors. Not the Council—United Resources itself. Or someone inside United Resources. "Or," Jack said carefully, "Jupiter is pulling harder than the engineers who built these anchors predicted, and the strain is showing up in the weakest points. Which happens to be"—he looked at the etching—"infrastructure that was built cheap by contractors who were paid too little and given too little time." Ruiz understood. "You're saying the sabotage is systemic. The company built them weak and now someone's pointing at a symbol and calling it murder." "I'm saying we have four days to keep five anchors from failing, and the people who built them knew they wouldn't last this long. The question is whether we can fix what they broke." They worked through the night and into the morning, reinforcing Anchor Four's failing strut with everything they had. When they finished, it held—but Jack knew, with the certainty of a man who had spent twenty years watching steel and ice and gravity do exactly what they were designed to do, that it would hold for maybe a week at most. "Three to go," Ruiz said, and started the rover. --- Anchor Five was a surprise. The cavity was small—negligible, compared to the others. The anchor was structurally sound. And it was the only one that was actually helping. "Wire it to the network last," Jack said. "If this one's holding on its own, we don't want to drag it down with the failing anchors. We use it as the primary anchor and let the others draw from it." Ruiz installed the final coupling at dusk on the fourth day. The five-anchor network went live, and Jack watched the readouts with the kind of intense focus that comes from knowing your entire livelihood depends on numbers on a screen. The network held. The distributed load system worked. Anchor Five carried the brunt of the stress while the others shared what they could. It wasn't perfect. It wouldn't be perfect as long as Jupiter kept pulling harder and Europa's ice kept cracking. But it was the best they could do, and for now, it was enough. Jack sat in the command module and stared at the Jupiter-sized face hanging in the sky above them. It was beautiful, in the way that things are beautiful when they can kill you without noticing. "Chief?" Ruiz appeared in the doorway, exhausted and smiling in a way that Jack hadn't seen in weeks. "We did it. All five. Network's stable." Jack nodded. He didn't feel triumphant. He felt the way a man feels after surviving a storm he knows will come again. But it was enough. For now, it was enough. "Get some sleep, Ruiz. Tomorrow we start thinking about Anchor Six." Ruiz's smile faded. "There's no Anchor Six."
