I don't take cases involving women. That's been my rule since '43, when a client hired me to follow his wife and I found her in a motel off Sunset with a man who wasn't her husband. She paid me double to look the other way. I took the money. I looked. And I learned that money doesn't make you forget anything—it just makes you forget slower. But Virginia Cole was different. The call came at 2:17 AM. I was half-drunk, half-asleep, in my office above a Chinese restaurant that smelled permanently of ginger and regret. The phone rang. I answered. A woman's voice: "Find Virginia. She's at Blackwood's. She's dying." The line went dead. Virginia. Six months without a word. Six months since she walked out of my life with a suitcase and a smile that said she was sorry but she had to go. I hadn't looked for her. I'm not that kind of detective. I find missing pets, I find cheating husbands, I find the occasional drunk who wandered out of a bar in Boyle Heights. I don't find women who don't want to be found. But Virginia was different. I drove to her apartment in Hollywood at dawn. The place was empty. Clothes gone. Makeup on the sink. Script on the table, open to page 47—a B-movie called "Canyon of Dreams" that would never be made. On the mirror, written in red lipstick: J—B. Basement. X-7. Blackwood. Basement. Compound X-7. I knew the name. Arthur Blackwood. Pharmaceuticals. Hollywood Hills mansion. The kind of man who shakes your hand and makes you feel important while his thumb checks the pulse in your wrist. I'd met him once at a charity gala that Virginia's agent had dragged me to. "You should meet Blackwood," the agent said. "He's interesting." He was interesting the way a shark is interesting. I drove to the Hollywood Hills. The gates were iron. The walls were fifteen feet high. There were no cameras, no security guards, just a doorbell and a speaker. I pressed the button. "Blackwood residence," said a voice that sounded like it had been trained to say words without feeling them. "I'm Jack Mercer. Private investigator. I'd like to speak with Mr. Blackwood." A pause. Then: "Mr. Blackwood is busy." "Tell him it's about Compound X-7." Another pause. Longer this time. Then: "Please wait." Five minutes later, the gates opened. Blackwood was waiting in a garden that cost more than my annual income. He was handsome in the way that handsome men who are used to getting what they want are handsome—relaxed, confident, knowing that the world bends toward him. "Mr. Mercer," he said. "What can I do for you?" "I'm looking for a missing person. Virginia Cole. Twenty-seven. Actress. Last seen heading to your facility." Blackwood's smile didn't change. "I'm afraid I don't know—" "Her mirror says X-7. Your compound. I know what it does. I want to see the facility." He studied me. I studied him. A detective studying a man who has spent his life studying other people's weaknesses. He was good. But I had been doing this for fifteen years, and I can read a man the way he reads a balance sheet. "You're LAPD?" he asked. "Former LAPD. Homicide. I left because they told me to stop asking questions about who gets prosecuted and who doesn't." Blackwood's smile widened, just slightly. "Follow me." The facility was immaculate. White walls, white coats, equipment that gleamed under fluorescent lights. It could have been a lab. It could have been a hospital. It could have been a tomb disguised as a laboratory, which is what most tombs are. Blackwood showed me around. Six rooms. Six sterile chambers. Six sets of equipment. "We preserve organs here," he said. "Hearts. Livers. Kidneys. We keep them viable for transplant." "Glass cylinders," I said. "Filled with blue-green fluid." Blackwood paused. "Those are for something different. Experimental research." "May I see them?" "No." "Why not?" "Because it's private." "Mr. Blackwood, I'm a detective. Private is the one thing I can't accept." He looked at me for a long time. Then he led me through a door I hadn't noticed—hidden behind a bookshelf, which was dramatic and therefore telling. We went down stairs. More stairs. The air grew colder. The fluorescent lights changed to something dimmer, warmer. We reached a corridor. At the end of the corridor were six glass cylinders arranged in a semicircle, each filled with blue-green fluid. Inside each cylinder: a young woman. Eyes open. Body motionless. Breathing slowly. Six of them. All beautiful. All identical in their stillness. "Three are empty," I said. "Transferred," Blackwood said. "To other facilities." "To where?" "That's proprietary." I walked to the second cylinder. Inside: Virginia. Her eyes moved when I moved. They tracked me. She knew I was there. Her lips moved. I couldn't hear her, but I could read them: Jack. I turned to Blackwood. "How long have they been in there?" "Varies. Six months to eighteen." "And they're conscious?" His smile returned. "The compound induces a state of hyper-awareness. Motor functions are suppressed, but the mind remains active. They hear everything. They see everything. They feel everything." "How long does that last?" "Indefinitely." I looked at Virginia's eyes. They were wide. Not with fear. With exhaustion. She had been in there for months. Maybe a year. Hearing Blackwood. Hearing everything. Unable to move. Unable to speak. I found the notes on a desk. Blackwood's handwriting. Clinical. Methodical. Subject 1-3: Neural degradation after 18 months. Subject 4-5: Partial recovery. Subject 6: Unknown. Compound X-7 effects on consciousness: subject remains aware. Duration: indefinite. Conclusion: the subject experiences time normally. Cannot recommend use beyond 6 months. Recommendation: destroy records. Recommend: destroy everything. I stood with the crowbar. Virginia's eyes were wide. She'd been in there for eight months. How many of those months had she been alone? How many nights had Blackwood read to her? How many times had she wanted him to break the glass and he hadn't? I swung the crowbar. The glass cracked. Blue fluid spilled across the floor. Virginia's eyes closed. I dragged her from the chamber. She was cold. She was breathing. She was alive. Blackwood arrived with police. He had called them the moment I entered the basement—as though he had anticipated this, as though this was part of the experiment. "I was going to save them," I told Detective Santos when she arrived. Santos looked at the basement. At the notes. At the six chambers. She didn't respond. She just took out her radio and called for an ambulance. The story broke three days later. Blackwood's empire collapsed. The three surviving women were hospitalized. Virginia survived but never spoke. I visited her once. She was alive. Her eyes were open. They didn't track. I left a flower on her bed. On the drive home, my phone rang. An unknown number. A woman's voice: "Mr. Mercer? I'm in San Francisco. I know what Blackwood did. And I know about the ones in San Francisco. Can you help us?" I looked at the palm trees outside my car window. They swayed in the wind like they were drowning. "Send me the address," I said. © 2026 - Authored by Z R ZHANG ( EL9507135 -- パスポート番号[ちゅうごく] 중국 여권 번호 Номер паспорта หมายเลขหนังสือเดินทาง Passnummer رقم جواز السفر CHN Passport) The aforementioned Author hereby grants to OXFORD INDUSTRIAL HOLDING GROUP (ASIA PACIFIC) CO., LIMITED (BRN74685111) all economic property rights, including but not limited to the rights of: reproduction, distribution, rental, exhibition, performance, communication to the public via information network, adaptation, compilation, commercial operation, authorization for third-party use, and rights enforcement.
