In September of 2005, the letter did not come. He mentioned it to his wife Sarah at dinner on the first Thursday of October. "Walt must have forgotten," he said, passing the salad bowl. "The man is nearly eighty. His memory cannot be what it was." Sarah, who had grown up in Vermillion and understood its rhythms the way a fish understands current, said nothing. She looked at their daughter Layla, who was fourteen now and pushing peas around her plate with the particular intensity of adolescent sorrow, and then she looked back at Kamran and gave him the small smile she had been giving him more and more often since the towers fell. It was a smile that said: you are a good man and I love you and you do not see what I see. The second thing: Mrs. Calloway. Mrs. Calloway lived three houses down on Maple Street. For thirteen years she had waved at Kamran every morning when he walked to campus. Not a big wave — a lift of the hand from where she stood watering her geraniums, the green hose arcing silver water onto the pavement. He would wave back. This was the transaction of neighborliness, the small currency of belonging. On the morning of October 17, 2005, Kamran stepped onto his front porch at 7:42 AM as he always did. Mrs. Calloway was watering her geraniums as she always was. He raised his hand. She looked down at her phone — a silver flip phone she had only recently acquired, her children's gift for her seventy-second birthday — and began typing something with the concentrated frown of the technologically new. He lowered his hand. He walked to campus. He told himself that Mrs. Calloway had simply been absorbed in a text message. Elderly people and technology, he said to Sarah that evening. They become obsessed. It is a known phenomenon. Sarah gave him the smile. The third thing happened in November. Layla came home from school on a Friday and went directly to her room and closed the door. This was not unusual — she was fourteen, door-closing was her primary form of communication — but when Kamran knocked at dinnertime she was red-eyed and she would not come out. "She was not invited," Sarah told him in the kitchen, voice low. "Megan Thompson's sleepover. Seven girls from her class. Layla was not invited." "Megan has been Layla's friend since kindergarten," Kamran said. "Yes," Sarah said. "There must be a reason. Perhaps Megan could only invite a certain number. Perhaps Layla said something. Children have these dramas." "Yes," Sarah said. "They do." He did not push further. He was a scholar of literature, trained in close reading, in the excavation of subtext. But the text of his own life he read as he read the Quran — in translation, with a scholar's appreciation for beauty, missing the poetry of the original. The fourth thing: Dean Morrison. On the first Monday of December, Kamran was summoned to the dean's office. The summons itself was not unusual — Morrison was an administrator, and administrators summoned — but the phrasing of his assistant's email was curious. Dean Morrison would like to discuss the upcoming symposium on world poetry. No agenda attached. No pre-circulated documents. The dean's office smelled of old coffee and new carpet. Morrison was a Methodist from Indiana who had been dean for twenty-two years and who believed, with the earnestness of his denomination, that all problems could be solved through frank conversation. The springs made a sound like a small animal. "A parent called. Two parents, actually. They expressed some, ah, discomfort with the symposium featuring poets from, let's say, certain regions. Given the current climate." "Which regions?" "The committee suggests perhaps focusing on European and American poets this year. You know, something our community can really connect with. Whitman. Frost. Yeats. Nothing too..." "Controversial?" "That's not the word I would use," Morrison said. "But since you said it." When he told Sarah, she did not give him the smile. She put her hand on his and said, "Twelve years you have organized this symposium. Twelve years no one complained." "The climate has changed," Kamran said. "People are frightened. It is understandable." "The climate," Sarah said, "did not change on its own." The fifth thing arrived in the spring semester. A parent — he never learned which one, Morrison protected their identity as if they were a confidential informant — had formally requested that their child be transferred out of Dr. Abbasi's section of Introduction to Comparative Literature. "Nothing personal," Morrison said, reading from a memo. "They simply feel their child would benefit from a different pedagogical approach." "What pedagogical approach?" "They were not specific." "I am the only professor who teaches that course." "I am aware." Morrison removed his glasses and polished them with a cloth that he produced from his desk drawer as if he had been waiting for precisely this moment. "The parent was adamant. Nothing personal." "People keep saying that." Kamran stood up. "Nothing personal. It is the most personal thing anyone has ever said to me." He taught his class that afternoon — fourteen students instead of fifteen, the empty chair in the third row as conspicuous as a missing tooth — and he spoke about the ghazals of Hafez, about the wine and the beloved and the unbearable longing for the divine, and he watched his remaining students take notes and he wondered which of their parents had considered making the call and had not, and whether that restraint was support or merely delayed action. The sixth thing wore a uniform. On the first day of the fall semester of 2006, Kamran approached the campus security booth at the east entrance. He had walked through this gate approximately two thousand three hundred times over thirteen years. The guard, a man named Bill Driscoll who had once asked Kamran to tutor his nephew in English composition, stepped out of the booth. "ID, please." "Bill, you know who I am." "I know. ID, please." He showed his faculty card. Bill examined it as if it were a suspect document, holding it up to the light, checking the photograph against Kamran's face with theatrical scrutiny. Then he handed it back. "Have a good day, Professor." This happened the next morning. And the next. And the next. Every single morning. At first Kamran asked, "Is there a new policy?" and Bill said, "Just following procedures." At first Kamran joked, "Am I suddenly suspicious?" and Bill did not laugh. At first Kamran told himself that Vermillion College must have tightened security for everyone, that Bill was merely being thorough, that this was September and September was the month of new rules. He did not check whether Bill was asking other professors for ID. He did not want to know. The seventh thing was not a thing at all. It was the accumulation of things. In October of 2006, Kamran attended a faculty meeting in the Higgins Building. Twenty-three professors sat around a conference table. During the discussion of the new curriculum requirements, he raised his hand to speak. The department chair called on Professor Henderson, who had not raised his hand. Kamran lowered his. The discussion moved on. He told himself he had simply been too slow, that the chair had not seen him, that these things happened in meetings all the time. In November, he submitted a proposal for a new course: Poetry of the Islamic Golden Age. The curriculum committee returned it with a request for revisions. He revised. They requested more revisions. He revised again. They requested a review by the college's legal counsel regarding "curricular alignment with institutional mission." In December, he was walking across the quad when a student — one of his own students from the previous semester, a boy named Tyler who had written a perfectly competent essay on the Rubaiyat — saw him approaching and abruptly changed direction, ducking into the science building with the guilty speed of someone avoiding a creditor. Feldman nodded slowly. "Kamran," he said, "you know how much I respect you. So I'm going to say something as a friend. Don't start seeing patterns where there are none. That way leads to paranoia. And paranoia is not, in the current environment, a good look." The phrase struck Kamran with physical force. In the current environment. Not a good look. Feldman was not warning him about his mental health. Feldman was warning him about his optics. That night he lay in bed beside Sarah, staring at the ceiling. "Am I being paranoid?" he asked. Sarah was quiet for a long time. Then she said, "Do you remember when we first moved here? How everyone was so welcoming? The welcome basket from the church. The invitations to dinner. The way Mrs. Calloway brought us zucchini bread every August." "Yes." "When did that stop?" He thought. He could not remember. It had not stopped in a single moment. Every bank had just run out of mortgage applications. No one told them to leave. They just couldn't stay." "Jesus, Sarah." "I know." She rolled toward him. "I love this town. I grew up in this town. But I know what it does." In February of 2007, Morrison called him to the office again. This time the coffee was fresher and the carpet had been replaced — the college was doing renovations, Morrison explained, upgrading the facilities. "We're reorganizing the Comparative Literature program," Morrison said. "Given enrollment trends, the board has decided to merge it with the English department. Your position is being reclassified." "What does reclassified mean?" "It means you'll be teaching Freshman Composition. Three sections. It's a vital service to the college. Our students need strong writing skills." "I have a PhD from Oxford. I have published three books. I am a tenured professor." "And tenure is fully respected," Morrison said. "You'll still be a tenured professor. Just teaching Freshman Composition." He walked home across the quad. It was a cold day, the sky the color of old zinc. The trees were bare. The paths were empty. He passed the security booth. Bill Driscoll asked for his ID. "One hundred and eight," Kamran said. "What's that, Professor?" "Nothing. Nothing at all." At dinner, Layla asked if she could transfer to the public high school in the next county. "It's a longer drive," she said, "but they have a better arts program." Kamran looked at Sarah. Sarah looked at her plate. And in that exchange — wordless, instantaneous, shared — he understood that his daughter had learned to count absences too. That night, after the children were asleep, he went to his study and took down his copy of Rumi. He opened it to a passage he had read a hundred times, a thousand times, the words worn smooth as river stones by the current of his attention. *Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there.* He had always found comfort in these lines. The idea that beyond the binary, beyond accusation and defense, there was a space of pure being where the soul could rest. But tonight the words read differently. Tonight he saw that Rumi was speaking of death — the field beyond wrongdoing was the grave. The soul released from the body, from the community, from the thousand small judgments that constitute a life among others. He was not being accused. He was not being attacked. He was being erased — quietly, legally, politely, with full respect for tenure and procedure and the bylaws of the Kiwanis Club. And the most terrible thing was that he could not prove any of it. If he tried, he would seem exactly like what Feldman had warned him against: a paranoid man seeing patterns in noise, a foreigner who did not understand how small towns worked, a Muslim professor who had finally, inevitably, revealed himself to be unreasonable. The immune system does not recognize itself by intention. It recognizes by shape. It does not ask whether the foreign cell means harm. It simply sees what does not belong and begins, slowly, cell by cell, to close around it. On the first day of March, 2007, Kamran woke at 5:30 AM as he always did. He showered. He dressed. He ate breakfast. He kissed Sarah. He walked to campus. He passed Mrs. Calloway's house — she was not outside, the geraniums were dead, it was still winter. He approached the security booth. Bill Driscoll was reading a newspaper. "Good morning, Professor." "Good morning, Bill." He waited. Bill continued reading. "No ID check today?" Bill looked up, and for a moment his face showed something Kamran had never seen there before — not hostility, not kindness, but the flat affect of a task completed, of a function no longer needed. "New policy," Bill said. "We've been asked to focus on visitors." Kamran walked through the gate. He went to his office. He sat at his desk, surrounded by the books that had accompanied him from Lahore to Oxford to the cornfields of Ohio, and he understood at last that he had not been paranoid. He had been perfectly lucid. The pattern had been real. And now that it had done its work — now that he had been relegated to Freshman Composition, now that his symposium had been defanged, now that his daughter had stopped expecting invitations — the system had no further use for its mechanisms. He was not being watched anymore because he no longer needed watching. He had been neutralized. He had been absorbed. He had become, at last, exactly what Vermillion required: a quiet man who taught the parts of speech to eighteen-year-olds and did not trouble the community with Persian poetry or Islamic philosophy or any reminder that the world was larger than the cornfields and the church steeples and the one main street with its single traffic light. He pulled out a piece of paper. He began to write. Not a letter of resignation — that would be a confrontation, and there was nothing left to confront. Not a complaint — that would require an incident, and there had been no incidents. Instead he began to write a translation. A new translation of the ghazal he had been teaching when the first parent called, when the first invitation failed to arrive, when he still believed that knowledge could build a sanctuary that no system could breach. He wrote for three hours. When he finished, he read it over once, then placed it in a drawer. He had no intention of publishing it. It was not for publication. It was for the field beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing.
