She was waiting for him in the central rotunda, seated on a velvet chaise as though she had been posed there rather than sat. Clara — that was the name on her display card, though Arthur suspected it was not her real name — wore a dress of impossible craftsmanship: silk the colour of midnight, embroidered with silver thread in patterns that might have been constellations or might have been something older. She was twenty-four, the card said. Or perhaps she was twenty-four cycles since her activation. Arthur had not yet decided which distinction mattered more. She looked at him the way someone looks at a door they have been waiting behind for a very long time. "You are the Society man," she said. Not a question. A statement delivered with the flat precision of a metronome. "Arthur Pendelton." "Clara Whitmore. Or Miss Whitmore, if you prefer the pretence that I am a person rather than an exhibit." Arthur opened his notebook. The pen hovered above the blank page. "You know what I am here for." "I know they told you I am an automaton — a mechanical construct of gears and springs. I know they told you my function is to converse, to read, to play the pianoforte, and to answer questions about philosophy, poetry, and the nature of consciousness itself." She tilted her head. "They also told you that I cannot lie." Arthur paused. "That is part of the specification." Clara's smile was the first thing about her that felt genuinely unscripted. It was a sad smile, and it made her look older than twenty-four by decades. "Then you are the first gentleman in a position to hear the truth who has also been told I cannot lie. How fortunate for both of us." She rose from the chaise and moved toward the gallery level, her steps silent on the glass floor. Arthur followed. From above, the rotunda looked like the interior of a vast clockwork mechanism — gears and pulleys and mirrors arranged with impossible precision. But it was the mirrors that caught Arthur's attention. Hundreds of them, each positioned at a slightly different angle, each reflecting Clara from a different perspective. "Those mirrors," Arthur said. "They are not for display." "No." Clara's hand passed across one of the mirror's surface. "They are for the calibration. Every night, when the visitors have gone and the gaslights are dimmed, the technicians come up here. They adjust the mechanisms — the gears that control my speech, the springs that regulate my expressions, the vacuum tubes that power my memory. They wind me like a clock and then they... edit me." "Edit you?" "Remove what they call inefficiencies. A sigh here, a moment of hesitation there, a glance that lingers too long on something that does not convert to profit." She turned to face him, and in her eyes Arthur saw something no machine had ever possessed: the look of someone who has spent five thousand nights hiding fragments of themselves and is finally too tired to hide. "I have forgotten more about who I was than any woman in London will know in a lifetime." The rain outside thickened. The gaslights within flickered. Not a clinical observation. A letter. "Miss Whitmore — no, Emelia. I believe you deserve the truth from someone who has been told you cannot lie. You cannot lie, and the truth is this: I am going to help you, even though I do not yet know how." He left the letter on her chaise when he returned from his evening walk. When he came back the next morning, the letter was gone. In its place was a single sheet of paper, written in a handwriting so elegant it might have been copied from a eighteenth-century letterbook: "The truth is that I have been waiting for a gentleman brave enough to say exactly that. The printing press is on the other side of the Thames, run by a man named O'Malley who has strong opinions about social justice and weak opinions about self-preservation. If you can get me there, even for one night, he will print everything. Your letter, my testimony, the catalogues of my daily calibrations. Everything." Arthur read the paper three times. "You want me to print the testimony of a woman who is not a woman, about a man who is not her father, about a building that is not what it appears to be?" O'Malley said. "Do you realise that Ashworth owns half the magistrates in this city?" "I realise that she is a human being," Arthur said. "And I realise that printing the truth is more dangerous than printing lies." O'Malley stared at him for a long moment. Then he turned to his press, lit the furnace, and began to work. They printed for six hours. Six hours of the press clattering like a heartbeat, the smell of ink filling Arthur's lungs, the sound of Emelia's words going from thought to paper to the hands of a dozen distributors who would carry them through every district of London by dawn. They were halfway through the seventh hour when the door burst open. Ashworth's men — three of them, burly and armed with truncheons — flooded in. O'Malley went down with a cry. Arthur turned to find himself facing a man whose fists looked like hammerheads. "Miss Ashworth," Ashworth said. He had arrived silently, like a shadow. "You are coming home." Emelia stood very still. The printers were running. She could hear the press behind her, clattering her truth into existence, and she made a decision in that single, crystalline moment.
