"The resonance is wrong," Alistair said. He did not look up from his calculations. "Not wrong — impossible. They should not interact at all. But they do. The gravitational tugs between them are creating a feedback loop that should not exist." Eleanor set down her pen. "A feedback loop?" "I do not know another word for it. Looked at the numbers. Looked again. "By the third cycle, everything falls apart." Eleanor came to his shoulder and read over his shoulder. The numbers were not large, but they were consistent. Every period of eighty-four years, the comets drew closer together in their approach to the sun. Each passage amplified the chaos of the next. By the third cycle — the cycle that would culminate in 1914 — the orbital perturbations would exceed any calculable bound. "When was the last cycle?" she asked. "1790." Alistair's voice was flat. A woman's hand had clearly been involved, they said, but a woman's mind could not be expected to sustain the argument. Eleanor stood at the lectern for twelve minutes and said nothing. She watched the faces of the men who had spent her father's money, who had used his equipment, who accepted his hospitality, and who would never, in any possible future, take her seriously. That night, in the carriage ride home, Alistair said: "You should not have spoken." "They would not let me present." "They would not have let you present even if you had remained silent. It was 47 pages long, included 12 diagrams, and received exactly three citations in the first year. None of them were positive. III. Alistair's consumption began in the winter of 1908. He tried to hide it from Eleanor by working longer hours in the observatory, but the cold air made him cough, and the coughing made the cold worse. By spring, Eleanor could see the bones in his face when he turned toward the light.
