On the side of the suitcase, printed by the company for advertising purposes, was a logo: a small blue shield with the words "Federal Distribution Services" beneath it. It was not a federal government logo. It was the logo of his company's shipping partner. But from a distance, in the Mississippi heat, it might look like something else entirely. "Phone's at the general store," the old man said. "But you do not need to go there. Come on in. My name is Otis." Thomas followed Otis down a dirt road to a house that had once been beautiful. White pillars held up a porch that was sagging in the middle. The paint was peeling. The garden was overgrown. But the house stood with the stubborn dignity of something that had once been grand and refused to admit it was gone. Inside, Otis poured Thomas a glass of sweet tea and picked up a rotary phone.
